भगवती की दस महाविद्याओं में से एक हैं महाकाली जिनके काले और डरावने रूप की उत्पत्ति राक्षसों का नाश करने के लिए हुई थी। यह एकमात्र ऐसी शक्ति है जिनसे स्वयं काल भी भय खाता है। उनका क्रोध इतना विकराल रूप ले लेता है कि संपूर्ण संसार की शक्तियां मिलकर भी उनके गुस्से पर काबू नहीं पा सकती।
महाकाली को खुश करने के लिए उनकी फोटो या प्रतिमा के साथ महाकाली के मंत्रों का जाप भी किया जाता है। इस पूजा में महाकाली यंत्र का प्रयोग भी किया जाता है। इसी के साथ चढ़ावे आदि की मदद से भी मां को खुश करने की कोशिश की जाती है। अगर पूरी श्रद्धा से मां की उपासना की जाए तो आपकी सारी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण हो सकती हैं।
